Top 23 coolest places in K-Town that no longer exist

0. Fort Sanders- I'm really hoping I'll be proved wrong here, and that the cool houses win over the ugly expensive 'lifestyle' condos.
1. The Stone Bench (in the backyard of a house that used to be on Clinch &16th).
2. Raven Records in its original location ( where Todd Steed sold me The Velvet Underground w/Nico when I was 16) .
3. Aunt Bee's Diner (Across from St.Mary's hospital, open 24-7).
4. Acme Pizza - especially the back room.
5. Vatican Pizza
6. Salvador Deli
7. Retro Junction
8. Planet Earth (Smokin Dave's New Year's 1989 show was *so* cool...)
9. Gryphons (oh how I miss you... I could do an entire list just on Gryphons)
10. Original Java Old City, especially the alleyway.
11. The Torch on open mic nights .
12. Kaveh's house on Highland Ave.
13. Chelsea Station.
14. Surplus City (you can still visit the crumbling foundation on Chapman Hwy, a block down from the turnoff for Ft. Dickerson)
15. Kay's Ice Cream on Corner of Kingston Pike and Forest Heights (now a closed Bi-Lo)
16. Every drive-in movie theater that ever existed in K-Town, especially the one out South Knox that advertised pornos with funny names.
17. Harold's
18. Sam & Andy's
19. I have been told by older friends that when Vic & Bill's was on the strip it was home to very cool punk shows, so on it goes...
20. The old space in South knox where Sasquatch used to perform really cool plays
21. Little Sisters in the Old City
22. Printer's Mark bookstore on Market Square
23. Mercury Theater

Yep, that pretty much sums it up, I think. You forgot about the concrete garden next to the Hilton, though. And Wallows. Also, I was a fan of Underdog Records for the year it was there. According to their website, the Longbranch's first floor is now a bead shop? WTFFFFFF? That doesn't count. The Longbranch is officially something else and "no longer exists."

My man Scott Cardwell saw Black Flag at Vic-n-Bills on the Strip. Dang. When I walked into Preservation Pub last year, me and my girlfriend nearly fainted--so weird for it not to be the Mercury. Was pissed to discover that Harolds closed when I was there last, especially since I was DJing on the same block and was all set to walk over. Best score from Raven: Australian import Pixies TROMPE LE MONDE on blue wax. It was up on the wall forever before I plunked down my $25--still the most I've ever paid for a record. Brandon from Superdrag sold me a used copy of Beastie's ILL COMMUNICATION on wax before it got put out on the floor so I could pay less. I felt hooked-up. Brandon was cool--the anti-rock star. Me and TM crew did the graf pieces inside Gryphons. Scott knew the owner and bet him a big 'ol bar tab that he could get real live graffiti writers to paint his walls if the guy would buy us the paint. Scott won that bet. *I* remember when Printer's Mark was on 11th. So there. I still have an ACME pizza work shirt someone gave me. The name badge said "Rick" but somebody wrote a "P" in front of it in ballpoint. Huh-huh.

And I'd forgotten that PM was on 11th,so win that round, but I do remember the Black and Red anarchist bookstore in the basement of Laurel Theater where Brian & Tim worked before the Mark came to be...

ARG! Left Knoxville in 92. Most of that shit was still around. Gryphons - best place to wash your clothes and have them smell like smoke and cheap beer...

I arrived in KNOX in spring 93 and left in Fall of 98,, and man. I witnessed the Birth of the Old City when it was so so busy (Amigos, Bw3s, Manhattens, The Corner lot that Amersterdams took over before they were busted for underage drinking). I loved bouncing on the strip and to the Old City. I came back to see a friend (Paul Wise) in 2004 and was sadden by all of the changes.. :(
