Jack Neely asks if Knoxville is "finally learning how to try?"
For years I had a vague sense of unrest here in Knoxville. Then, after going to NY, SF and other cities, ensconcing myself in techies who were building "the next great thing" day in, day out, I realized how much we "settle" for "good enough" around here all the more.
But I do think that is changing, slowly. Jack Neely has a good piece on this, and despite lacking more data, I think he's on to something. I think outside pressures are largely what's going on here, since we live in a more connected world. It's great to consider this, no matter what.
Then you read the comment by the small town guy and wonder... I'm sure there are also people who live here who miss the "good old days" when Jim Crow laws were in effect and lynchings were back country justice. But you get that all over.

I'm not sure that smalltownguy is advocating lynchngs. I took his post as a throw to what Knoxville is and is loved for, being a big small town. I will openly admit that Knoxville has its backwards ways, but cities do, in some form or fashion. I love knoxville for always shifting in search of herself. Knoxville is not not ATL or Nashville, and we do not want to be. Neely talks about public transit not being taken seriously? The immediate downtown knox is a few miles, no need for integrated transit here. Suburbs are not nearlybas efficient as cities and neither is mass transit in the suburbs. Im not saying Knox shouldnt grow. I love that knox supports the ever growing food truck movement. I love that buildings are being repurposed and that several breweries call knox home. I just think it is important to remember that while we may look towards nashville or atlanta for inspiration we must remember that the beauty of knoxville is that its not nash or atl.
